Why haven\u2019t you heard more about Gates\u2019 dark side?<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re one of the richest people in the world, you can buy virtually anything you want \u2014 including control of the media so that it only prints favorable press. If you have enough money \u2014 and Bill Gates certainly does \u2014 you can even get major media companies like ViacomCBS, which runs MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon and BET, among others, to insert your approved PSAs into their programming.<sup><span id=\"edn1\" data-hash=\"#ednref1\">1<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In the past, the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) funded the placement of \u201ceducational\u201d messages in popular TV shows such as \u201cER,\u201d \u201cLaw &amp; Order: SVU\u201d and \u201cPrivate Practice,\u201d including topics such as HIV prevention, surgical safety and the spread of infectious diseases, i.e., vaccinations.<sup><span id=\"edn2\" data-hash=\"#ednref2\">2<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0But this is only the beginning.<\/p>\n<h2>Gates Gave $319 Million to Media<\/h2>\n<p>Generally speaking, companies know better than to bite the hand that feeds them, and Bill Gates has had a hand in feeding hundreds of media outlets and ventures. Via more than 30,000 grants, Gates has contributed at least $319 million to the media, Alan MacLeod, a senior staff writer for MintPress News, revealed.<sup><span id=\"edn3\" data-hash=\"#ednref3\">3<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cRecipients of this cash include many of America\u2019s most important news outlets, including CNN, NBC, NPR, PBS and The Atlantic.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"MidProductAd\"><\/div>\n<p><em>Gates also sponsors a myriad of influential foreign organizations, including the BBC, The Guardian, The Financial Times and The Daily Telegraph in the United Kingdom; prominent European newspapers such as Le Monde (France), Der Spiegel (Germany) and El Pa\u00eds (Spain); as well as big global broadcasters like Al-Jazeera.\u201d<\/em><sup><span id=\"edn4\" data-hash=\"#ednref4\">4<\/span><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Examples of the Gates Foundations grants include $24,663,066 to NPR and $12,951,391 to The Guardian. Another $3.6 million grant to CNN was earmarked for \u201creport[ing] on gender equality with a particular focus on least developed countries, producing journalism on the everyday inequalities endured by women and girls across the world,\u201d while a $2.3 million grant to the Texas Tribune was intended \u201cto increase public awareness and engagement of education reform issues in Texas.\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn5\" data-hash=\"#ednref5\">5<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven that Bill is one of the charter schools\u2019 most fervent supporters, a cynic might interpret this as planting pro-corporate charter school propaganda into the media, disguised as objective news reporting,\u201d MacLeod wrote.<sup><span id=\"edn6\" data-hash=\"#ednref6\">6<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Gates Also Bankrolls \u2018Investigative\u2019 Journalism Centers<\/h2>\n<p>More than $38 million of Gates\u2019 money has been funneled to investigative journalism centers. The majority \u2014 $20.4 million \u2014 went to the International Center for Journalists to \u201cexpand and develop African media.\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn7\" data-hash=\"#ednref7\">7<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Another $3.8 million went to Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism in Nigeria. It might appear that Gates is intent on creating more favorable PR in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), an organization funded by the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation,<sup><span id=\"edn8\" data-hash=\"#ednref8\">8<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0is essentially a Gates Foundation subsidiary, and while some of its projects appear to be beneficial, most of its goals are centered on promoting biotechnology and chemical fertilizers. AGRA was launched in 2006 with funding from the Gates Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>After more than a decade, AGRA\u2019s influence has significantly worsened the situation in the 18 African nations targeted by this \u201cphilanthropic\u201d endeavor. Hunger under AGRA\u2019s direction increased by 30% and rural poverty rose dramatically.<sup><span id=\"edn9\" data-hash=\"#ednref9\">9<\/span>,<span id=\"edn10\" data-hash=\"#ednref10\">10<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<div class=\"productad\"><\/div>\n<h2>Objectivity Becomes Impossible<\/h2>\n<p>Gates\u2019 tentacles are far-reaching in the press. From press and journalism associations to journalistic training, Gates is an overarching keeper of the press, which makes true objective reporting pertaining to Gates himself \u2014 or his many initiatives \u2014 virtually impossible. According to MacLeod:<sup><span id=\"edn11\" data-hash=\"#ednref11\">11<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cToday, it is possible for an individual to train as a reporter thanks to a Gates Foundation grant, find work at a Gates-funded outlet, and to belong to a press association funded by Gates. This is especially true of journalists working in the fields of health, education and global development, the ones Gates himself is most active in and where scrutiny of the billionaire\u2019s actions and motives are most necessary.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Writing in the Columbia Journalism Review,<sup><span id=\"edn12\" data-hash=\"#ednref12\">12<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Tim Schwab also examined the recipients of nearly 20,000 Gates Foundation grants given to major media companies, including BBC, NBC, Al Jazeera, ProPublica, National Journal, The Guardian and the Center for Investigative Reporting.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, \u201cThe foundation even helped fund a 2016 report<sup><span id=\"edn13\" data-hash=\"#ednref13\">13<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0from the American Press Institute that was used to develop guidelines<sup><span id=\"edn14\" data-hash=\"#ednref14\">14<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0on how newsrooms can maintain editorial independence from philanthropic funders,\u201d Schwab writes, adding, \u201cGates\u2019s generosity appears to have helped foster an increasingly friendly media environment for the world\u2019s most visible charity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as you might suspect, Gates\u2019 donations come with strings attached. Those given to NPR were intended to target coverage of global health and education:<sup><span id=\"edn15\" data-hash=\"#ednref15\">15<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhen Gates gives money to newsrooms, it restricts how the money is used \u2014 often for topics, like global health and education, on which the foundation works \u2014 which can help elevate its agenda in the news media.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>For example, in 2015 Gates gave $383,000 to the Poynter Institute, a widely-cited authority on journalism ethics \u2026 earmarking the funds \u2018to improve the accuracy in worldwide media of claims related to global health and development.\u2019 Poynter senior vice president Kelly McBride said Gates\u2019s money was passed on to media fact-checking sites &#8230;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Since 2000, the Gates Foundation has given NPR $17.5 million [now up to $24.6 million<sup><span id=\"edn16\" data-hash=\"#ednref16\">16<\/span><\/sup>] through 10 charitable grants \u2014 all of them earmarked for coverage of global health and education, specific issues on which Gates works \u2026<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Even when NPR publishes critical reporting on Gates, it can feel scripted. In February 2018, NPR ran a story headlined \u2018Bill Gates Addresses \u2018Tough Questions\u2019 on Poverty and Power.\u2019 The \u2018tough questions\u2019 NPR posed in this Q&amp;A were mostly based on a list curated by Gates himself, which he previously answered in a letter posted to his foundation\u2019s website.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Are Gates\u2019 Power and Wealth Dangerous?<\/h2>\n<p>The level of Gates\u2019 wealth is unfathomable to most people. With a net worth of $130.5 billion,<sup><span id=\"edn17\" data-hash=\"#ednref17\">17<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0he yields incredible power over education, health and social policies. Speaking with MintPress News, Linsey McGoey, a professor of sociology at the University of Essex, U.K., explained that Gates\u2019 philanthropy comes with a price:<sup><span id=\"edn18\" data-hash=\"#ednref18\">18<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cPhilanthropy can and is being used deliberately to divert attention away from different forms of economic exploitation that underpin global inequality today.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>The new \u2018philanthrocapitalism\u2019 threatens democracy by increasing the power of the corporate sector at the expense of the public sector organizations, which increasingly face budget squeezes, in part by excessively remunerating for-profit organizations to deliver public services that could be delivered more cheaply without private sector involvement.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest charitable foundation in the world, with a trust endowment valued at $43.5 billion and yearly grant payments in excess of $3 billion annually.<sup><span id=\"edn19\" data-hash=\"#ednref19\">19<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0In addition to being one of the largest contributors to the World Health Organization, with heavy involvement in global public health, the Gates Foundation is deeply involved in agricultural development.<sup><span id=\"edn20\" data-hash=\"#ednref20\">20<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In a report by Global Justice Now, the excessive global influence held by the Gates Foundation is illustrated, starting with the $2 billion the foundation has spent on agriculture, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is the world\u2019s fifth largest donor to agriculture, spending $389 million in 2013; only Germany, Japan, Norway and the US have larger bilateral aid programmes to agriculture,\u201d the report noted, and, \u201cWith funding comes in influence.\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn21\" data-hash=\"#ednref21\">21<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Gates not only controls the media but is also the largest owner of farmland in the U.S.<sup><span id=\"edn22\" data-hash=\"#ednref22\">22<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0By 2030, Gates is pushing for drastic, fundamental changes, including widespread consumption of fake meat, adoption of next-generation nuclear energy and the growth of a fugus as a new type of nutritional protein.<sup><span id=\"edn23\" data-hash=\"#ednref23\">23<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the deadline Gates has given to reach \u201cnet zero\u201d carbon emissions is 2050,<sup><span id=\"edn24\" data-hash=\"#ednref24\">24<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0another red flag. Navdanya\u2019s report, \u201cEarth Democracy: Connecting Rights of Mother Earth to Human Rights and Well-Being of All,\u201d explains:<sup><span id=\"edn25\" data-hash=\"#ednref25\">25<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c\u2026 \u2018Net Zero\u2019 is a new strategy to get rid of small farmers in first through \u2018digital farming\u2019 and \u2018farming without farmers\u2019 and then through the burden of fake carbon accounting.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Carbon offsets and the new accounting trick of \u2018net zero\u2019 does not mean zero emissions. It means the rich polluters will continue to pollute and also grab the land and resources of those who have not polluted \u2014 indigenous people and small farmers \u2014 for carbon offsets.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Who Else Is Controlling the Media?<\/h2>\n<p>Gates\u2019 power over the media is immense, but he\u2019s a not a sole actor. Other players in media control include BlackRock and the Vanguard Group, the two largest asset management firms in the world, which also control Big Pharma.<sup><span id=\"edn26\" data-hash=\"#ednref26\">26<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0They\u2019re at the top of a pyramid that controls basically everything, but you don\u2019t hear about their terrifying monopoly because they also own the media.<\/p>\n<p>Blackrock and Vanguard hold large interests in pivotal companies, and Vanguard holds a large share of Blackrock. In turn, Blackrock has been called the &#8220;fourth branch of government&#8221; by Bloomberg as they are the only private firm that has financial agreements to lend money to the central banking system.<sup><span id=\"edn27\" data-hash=\"#ednref27\">27<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Aside from world media, the companies controlled by Blackrock and Vanguard span everything from entertainment and airlines to social media and communications.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a list of companies in which Vanguard and Blackrock strategically hold a large investment interest.
