Johnson & Johnson will pay $700 million to settle allegations from 42 states that it misled consumers about the safety of its talcum powder products, which were claimed to contain asbestos. The company denies wrongdoing and maintains its products are safe.
The settlement mandates J&J stop selling talcum powder-based baby and body powders in the U.S. The company now sells cornstarch versions. Major portions of the settlement will go to California, Florida, Texas, New York, and New Jersey.
Despite the settlement, J&J still faces over 53,000 lawsuits alleging its talcum powder caused ovarian cancer and mesothelioma. Last month, J&J offered an $8.9 billion settlement to resolve current and future claims, but it is unclear if plaintiffs will accept the offer.
